The Winnebago Workshop is a free art school on wheels created by Minneapolis-based photographer Alec Soth. “You can’t really teach the kind of work I do in a classroom,” explains Soth. “It’s all about being out in the world, looking around, and exploring.” With support from his Kickstarter backers, in the summer of 2016 Soth and a group of high school students traveled across the U.S. in a repurposed RV. Along the way, they were joined by a rotating cast of artists and writers who led workshops on multimedia storytelling. Over the course of their epic, art-filled road trip, Soth and his students meditated in the Golden Dome of Pure Knowledge in Iowa, interviewed Bob Dylan’s neighbor, and collaborated on pop-up exhibitions in parking lots and county fairs.
