Lars Jan, Joan Didion's THE WHITE ALBUM
236 people pledged $38,839 to support this project on Kickstarter.
“The White Album is among the most important essays ever written, by one of America's most incisive, essential writers. And we’re going to stage every word.”
These words by director Lars Jan became reality with the help of 236 backers. Obie Award-winning actor Mia Barron performed Joan Didion’s entire essay, which examines the year 1968 and its many revolutions, while architectural design studio P-A-T-T-E-R-N-S created an installation for the work, pairing cutting-edge lighting and sound technology. From the Black Panthers to student protests to Charles Manson, Jan’s staging shows how Didion’s dedication to documenting a world in turmoil reflects inequality, xenophobia, and the drive to build a better future today.
