Following her 716-hour solo performance work at MoMA, The Artist Is Present, Marina Abramović had a vision to create “a new institute for humanity.” Together with more than 4,000 supporters on Kickstarter, she founded the Marina Abramović Institute, dedicated to the presentation and preservation of “long durational” works of art. Since 2013, the MAI team has traveled to cities including São Paulo, Athens, Sydney, Buenos Aires, Basel, and Toronto to teach participants the Abramović Method, a series of exercises designed “to explore boundaries of body and mind.” The global institute will soon occupy a renovated building in Hudson, NY, providing a permanent space for performances, educational programs, and creative collaborations across art, science, technology, and spirituality.
