Nancy Borowick, The Family Imprint
740 people pledged $65,313 to support this project on Kickstarter.
How can photography help reframe death as a celebration of life? This question motivated artist Nancy Borowick to photograph her parents, Laurel and Howie, as they were diagnosed with stage-four cancer, underwent treatment, and passed away within 364 days of each other.
With the help of 740 backers on Kickstarter, Borowick took her photographs to print to convey the infinite complexities of pain, love, and a family in mourning. Hatje Cantz published the book with facsimiles of love letters, embroidered gifts, and family photos and cards. Borowick’s work is now distributed globally.
“Life is a gift, and no one promised me longevity.” —Howie Borowick (1955–2013)
