Pedro Reyes and Creative Time, Doomocracy
398 people pledged $86,064 to support this project on Kickstarter.
“Doomocracy,” as defined by Pedro Reyes, is “a form of government in which the supreme power is vested in a tyrant by a terrified general electorate” and “a corporate coup’détat in slow motion.” It’s also the name of Reyes’ immersive, site-specific installation that brought his worst political nightmares to life in the form of a haunted house, just in time for Halloween and the 2016 presidential election. Together with Creative Time, nearly 50 actors, and 398 backers, he transformed the once-abandoned Brooklyn Army Terminal into a disorienting maze of horrors, from the crisis of gun violence in America to an apocalyptic future in which only the wealthy can afford clean air. “The new vampires are banks,” warns Reyes. “The new Frankensteins are Monsanto and companies that are messing with the very essence of life.”
