Public Art Fund and Ai Weiwei, Good Fences Make Good Neighbors
883 people pledged $96,853 to support this project on Kickstarter.
Transforming security fences into public art installations, Good Fences Make Good Neighbors challenges the forces that divide and separate us. Artist and activist Ai Weiwei teamed up with Public Art Fund and 883 backers on Kickstarter to make this global vision a local reality, spanning over 300 sites across all five boroughs of New York City. The installation transforms areas of common access for New Yorkers into cages, fences, and other physical barriers, from the Washington Square Arch to bus stations in the Bronx and Staten Island. Weiwei then installed 200 portraits of immigrants and refugees on lampposts, offering a clearer view of those who are most affected by borders. "We see fences everywhere," Weiwei notes, "but many fences you can see through... We should rethink our status as human beings, and think about humanity as one."
