Good Fences Make Good Neighbors
883 people pledged $96,853 to support this project on Kickstarter.
Transforming security fences into public art installations, artist and activist Ai Weiwei challenges the forces that divide and separate us with his project Good Fences Make Good Neighbors. Spanning 300+ sites across all five boroughs of New York city, Weiwei teamed up with Public Art Fund and 883 backers to make this global vision a local reality. The works aim to physically block and surround areas of common access for New Yorkers, from the Washington Square Arch to bus stations from the Bronx to Staten Island. Over 200 portraits of immigrants and refugees are then scattered across lampposts in the city to show how and who has been affected by borders. "We see fences everywhere," Weiwei notes, "but many fences you can see through... We should rethink about our status as human beings, and rethink about humanity as one."
