In 2017, Austin lost 30,000 square feet of performance space. One of those spaces included The Off Center, run by the theater collective Rude Mechs. Instead of moving onward, they moved outward: with the help of 129 backers, Rude Mechs produced 10 events across 10 Austin locations in 10 months. From Kirk Lynn’s curse-word laden rewriting of Shakespeare plays to noise & music excavations by Grageriart, crushAustin celebrated the city’s still vibrant arts and art spaces, ultimately showing its viewers “what kind of city we want to be, what we value, and what our civic life should look like.”
