The Jewish Museum, Take Me (I’m Yours)
340 people pledged $31,018 to support this project on Kickstarter.
At some point or other, every museum frequenter has been scolded, “don’t touch the art!” Upending this convention, the Jewish Museum opened an exhibition where visitors could not only touch the art, but also take it home with them. Take Me (I’m Yours) featured work by over 40 international artists and more than 400,000 individual pieces of art, including air-filled capsules by Yoko Ono, candies by Félix González-Torres, spray-paint stencils by Lawrence Weiner, ribbons emblazoned with slogans by Andrea Bowers, and t-shirts by Rirkrit Tiravanija — all of which had to be continually replenished throughout the run of the exhibition. “Themes of community, giving, and sharing are especially suited to the democratic ideas of Take Me (I’m Yours),” notes the museum. With Kickstarter, they were able to “extend the ideas of giving and sharing to anyone in the world.”
